Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Heng Ratana, Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), has issued a strong appeal to Thailand for the strict and full implementation of the agreed-upon points from the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC), held on August 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia The call comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding border security and the prevention of future incidents along the Cambodia-Thailand border The GBC meeting, an ASEAN-facilitated initiative, addressed several key issues pertaining to border management and cooperation The points agreed upon aimed to enhance communication, coordination, and joint patrols to effectively address cross-border challenges, including illegal activities and the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) Ratana emphasized that strict adherence to these agreements is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the border regions and safeguarding the lives of Cambodian citizens The full and strict implementation of the GBC agreements is paramount to preventing future incidents and ensuring the safety and security of our people living along the border," stated Ratana in a press release issued on Saturday.
He further highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between CMAC and its Thai counterparts in clearing landmines and UXO from the border areas, a critical step in fostering trust and cooperation CMAC has been actively involved in demining operations along the Cambodia-Thailand border for several years, working closely with international organizations and Thai authorities The presence of landmines and UXO, a legacy of past conflicts, continues to pose a significant threat to local communities, hindering socio-economic development and causing tragic accidents Ratana acknowledged the progress made in demining efforts but stressed that sustained commitment and resources are essential to achieve a mine-free border The appeal from CMAC underscores the importance of regional cooperation within the ASEAN framework in addressing shared security challenges The Cambodia-Thailand border, while generally peaceful, has experienced occasional tensions and disputes in the past The effective implementation of the GBC agreements is seen as a vital mechanism for preventing misunderstandings, resolving conflicts peacefully, and promoting mutual trust and understanding The call for stricter border agreement implementation also resonates within the broader context of ASEAN's efforts to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration Secure and stable borders are essential for facilitating trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges, all of which are crucial for realizing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 Cambodia, as an active member of ASEAN, remains committed to fostering closer cooperation with its neighbors in addressing shared challenges and promoting regional peace and prosperity The director general said the implementation of GBC agreements would help to ensure the safety of Cambodians and Thais who live near the border.
The agreements facilitate coordination on border management, the resolution of border disputes, and cooperation on cross-border crime and security.
The call from CMAC demonstrates Cambodia's commitment to working with Thailand and other ASEAN countries to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the region The hope is for continued collaboration and adherence to agreements for the benefit of both nations and the wider ASEAN community This is particularly crucial given the economic interdependence of Cambodia and Thailand, and the need for stability to attract foreign investment and promote tourism
