Phnom Penh – The highly anticipated Techo International Airport is set to conduct its first test flight using an Airbus A320 aircraft on August 15th. This significant milestone marks a crucial step toward the airport's operational readiness and eventual opening, slated for 2025. The test flight will assess the airport's runway, navigation systems, and ground handling capabilities. Further tests involving different aircraft types and operational scenarios are planned in the coming months. The announcement comes amidst growing excitement and anticipation surrounding the completion of the airport, which aims to become a major regional aviation hub. The new airport, located approximately 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, is designed to handle up to 13 million passengers annually in its initial phase, with plans for future expansion to accommodate up to 50 million passengers per year. The airport is being developed by Cambodia Airport Investment Co Ltd (CAIC), a joint venture between Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA). “This A320 test flight is a pivotal moment for the Techo International Airport project,” stated a spokesperson for CAIC. “It allows us to validate our infrastructure and systems, ensuring they meet the highest international standards for safety and efficiency. The data collected from this flight will be invaluable as we continue to refine our operations and prepare for the official opening.” The A320 was chosen for the initial test due to its widespread use and suitability for short to medium-haul routes, common in Southeast Asia. The test flight will involve a comprehensive assessment of various aspects of the airport's infrastructure, including the runway’s surface and load-bearing capacity, the accuracy of the instrument landing system (ILS), and the effectiveness of air traffic control procedures. Ground crews will also be evaluated on their ability to efficiently handle aircraft arrival, departure, and turnaround processes. Observers from the SSCA and international aviation organizations will be present to monitor the test and provide feedback. The construction of Techo International Airport is a massive undertaking, involving significant investment in land acquisition, infrastructure development, and technology integration. The airport is expected to significantly boost Cambodia’s tourism sector and facilitate increased trade and investment. The existing Phnom Penh International Airport will continue operations, but Techo International Airport will eventually become the primary gateway to the capital city. Experts believe that the new airport will not only improve Cambodia's connectivity but also contribute to its economic growth by creating new job opportunities and attracting foreign investment. “A modern, efficient airport is essential for any country seeking to compete in the global economy,” said Dr. Sovannarith, an economist at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. “Techo International Airport will provide Cambodia with a significant competitive advantage in the region.” The successful completion of the August 15th test flight will pave the way for further trials and simulations in the lead-up to the airport's official opening. These subsequent tests will involve larger aircraft and more complex operational scenarios, ensuring that the airport is fully prepared to handle the demands of international air travel. The timeline remains on track for a full operational launch in 2025. Looking ahead, the Cambodian government envisions Techo International Airport as a catalyst for further development in the surrounding area. Plans are already underway to create an airport city, complete with hotels, shopping centers, and other amenities, transforming the area into a vibrant economic hub. The successful launch and operation of Techo International Airport is therefore seen as a key component of Cambodia’s long-term economic development strategy.
